Catalogue Note
Jane Skingley specialises in semi-abstract seascapes and landscapes painted in oils. Her evocative style saw her first exhibition sell out and since then she has exhibited her pictures in galleries and shows across the country. In 2008 she achieved the prestigious honour of having her art exhibited for the summer season at Glyndebourne Opera House.
The paintings are produced instinctively, using brustrokes and a palette knife to build up many layers, evoking mood and atmposhere rather than a search for realism. The multi-layered process takes weeks to complete.
Skingley is inspired by the landscape around her and the emotions that the setting evokes. She spent much of her childhood, sailing around the British coast, and it is these childhood memories together with her experience now, pottering bt the sea with her children, crabbing, rockpooling and making sandcastles at her family beach hut in the Witterings, which now inspire her wonderful sensitive portrayals of land and sea. Her paintings are notable in the way that they capture the energy and power of the elements.
